STUDY DEUTERONOMY? WHY?

That’s a very good question.  It actually may have been your first response when you discovered that the focus for our fall Bible study would be this book of the Old Testament.

Here are 10 good reasons for you to consider.

  1. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  II Timothy 3: 16 – 17
  2. Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy on several occasions while He was teaching and living on earth.
  3. There are over 100 quotes in the New Testament from Deuteronomy.
  4. The unchanging foundational principles for a relationship between God and man and man with man are found and explained by Moses in this book.
  5. Jesus explained to the religious leaders that the law of love given to Moses was still the most important guide for living. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it.
  6. Moses made it clear that the law which God gave to him was never meant to be a burden or a way to earn God’s favor.  It was always given as a gracious gift to help the Israelites (and us) experience His blessing and peace.
  7. The same problems and challenges, victories and strength, which the Israelites faced in Egypt, the wilderness, and as they entered the Promised Land are still true to our experience today.
  8. You will discover that our God has always been and always will be an unchanging God of love, mercy and forgiveness.
  9. You will also discover that our God is holy and righteous and will not share His glory with any other.
  10. God’s blessing will rest on you as you absorb the truths that He will bring into your mind and heart as you let Him speak to you through the words spoken and written by Moses – “a prophet whom the LORD knew face to face”.  (Deuteronomy 34: 10)

In preparation for this study, you might want to read the Book of Exodus!  It is the exciting narrative story which is summarized by Moses in Deuteronomy.

One Response to STUDY DEUTERONOMY? WHY?

  1. I’m reading the book of Exodus as you suggested for our preparation of this study. So far, it really stands out to me how important it was to God that His people be let go so they could go worship Him in the wilderness. God is still calling His people today to get away from the cares of the world and spend time in worship to Him. The kind of worship the Israelites were called to is different than the kind of worship we are called to today. I’ll keep reading!
