WHEN YOU HAVE TO WAIT – Intro Lesson 2 – April 23 – 30

We live in a world that values immediacy.  We expect quick and easy, convenient and available, don’t we?  Most of us have become accustomed to texting and next-day delivery along with pre-cooked and ready to go meals.  The thought of waiting in line, the busy signal, being put “on hold” or a traffic delay can immediately cause us to feel anxious, critical or apprehensive.  The thoughts in our minds linger around the question of “How Long?”  Unexpected delays, interruptions and unpredictable events are a part of life, aren’t they?  So why do you think patience is a character trait which is so under-valued?

Is it possible that the reality of wanting instant gratification could subtly affect our willingness to really believe that God will keep His promises?  While you and I probably believe in our minds that God is faithful and able to do what He has promised to do, our feelings can subtly cause us to doubt and to ask the question, “How long, Lord?”  As David expressed in more than a dozen of his songs, “O LORD, how long will you forget me?  Forever?  How long will you look the other way?  How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day?” (Psalm 13: 1 – 2) He doesn’t stop there, however, but quickly moves on to find joy and delight in God’s character and His promise.  “I trust in Your unfailing love.  I will sing to the LORD because He is good to me.”

Isn’t it interesting that in Psalm 37 the instruction, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” is followed by “Be still in the presence of the LORD and wait patiently for Him to act”?  His timing is never too early or too late.  His promises are there for you today and for tomorrow.  The question is whether or not you believe He is trustworthy.  If you do, why not start expressing your praise?
