Are you an adventurous person? Do you look for or participate in activities that will give you a thrill and cause your adrenaline to increase? You know – hang gliding, zip lines, cat walks, sky bridges, giant swings, bungee jumping, hot air ballooning. Adventure is defined as “undertaking a hazardous or risky enterprise or participation in an unusual event marked by excitement and suspense”. Most of these activities require equipment – cables, pulleys, ropes, platforms, harnesses, helmets, gloves AND people whom you trust. An individual could not safely experience any of these thrills alone. There needs to be the qualified and trained person who can belay you to safety when needed, explain the safety regulations, and who can, for example take you beyond your fears to the possibility of starting and then finishing the adventure successfully.
It is easy to make some comparisons between our willingness to be adventuresome in our physical life to our desire to open up ourselves to new and challenging experiences in our spiritual life. God often calls us into adventures that we might never choose for ourselves. He sometimes leads us through valleys that are dark and frightening. At other times, He takes us on steep slopes and over mountain passes that we think are not possible. Sometimes He simply says, “Are you willing to leave the comforts and security of home and walk with Me through a different city or desert or arena of life that is unfamiliar to you”? Quite often He doesn’t really make it clear what the destination might be or the experiences that will come our way, but he invites us to willingly follow Him one step at a time, one day at a time, and as we do He says, “I will never leave you or forsake you. I know what lies ahead and you can put your trust in Me.”
