Does it surprise you to know that the concept of “fearing God” can be found in so many of the Old Testament stories? The great leaders modeled what it meant when they demonstrated their desire to trust and follow Jehovah, their one and only God. They taught the people that it was very important to think about and remember the things that God had done for them personally, but also historically, so that they would not turn away from Elohim, their God. They assured the Israelites that God would be attentive to their prayers when they “took delight in revering His glorious name.” (Nehemiah 1: 11) That sounds like another great way to “fear God” – to deeply desire and find joy in honoring, loving, making known, promoting, and glorifying the name of Jesus throughout each day. May it be so today, oh Lord God, my Savior and Redeemer.
