“In A Weary Land” – Insight for Lesson 5

There are times when a song really helps! The words, the melody, and the thoughts can turn the wandering thoughts of my mind to a singular focus, so here’s my song for this week. It reminds me of Psalm 18 and fits the circumstances of our world today, doesn’t it?   Originally it was composed in 1880 by a fisherman off the north coast of England where the storms could be enormously dangerous. Ira Sankey put it to music when he discovered it in 1885. Here’s what the composer wrote:

“The Lord’s our rock, in Him we hide, a shelter in the time of storm.

Secure whatever ill be tide, a shelter in the time of storm.

O Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a weary land, a weary land.

O Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm.”

He goes on in the next verses to say,

“A shade by day, defense by night. No fear alarm, no fears affright.

The raging storms may ‘round us beat. We’ll never leave our safe retreat.

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear, Be Thou our helper ever near.”
