“This Little Light of Mine” – An Insight for Lesson 5

Did you ever sing “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine” in Sunday School when you were growing up?  It’s actually a song full of very practical and Biblical ideas. Years before Paul wrote to the Ephesians, Jesus had repeatedly called Himself the “light of the world” and encouraged His disciples to “let their light shine before others” through their kind deeds and good works. Now Paul is reminding his readers and us that we, too, can live as beacons of light in a very dark world.  Light brings hope.  Light reveals what is real and true.  Light makes it possible to see what is invisible in the darkness.  Pain diminishes when morning comes. Light is life-giving.  So I’m asking You, Lord –  help me “shine Your light all over the neighborhood”, “don’t let Satan blow it out”, and “keep it shining very brightly until Jesus comes again”.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light – for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth – and find out what please the Lord.   Ephesians 5: 8 – 10
