I’m guilty and I’m quite sure you are, too. It’s a temptation that comes easily to me at times because I want people to think more highly of me. Sometimes I do the kind or generous thing simply because it makes me feel good about myself or Satan tricks me into believing that I can in some way earn more of God’s favor or blessings. At other times I am tempted to bring “less than my best” as an offering to the Lord. It’s no wonder that David wrote in Psalm 139, “Search me, O God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” Thank you, Jesus, that You know my heart and that with you there is always forgiveness and mercy.
